Is part-time work a "compulsory course" for international students?
When it comes to studying abroad in London, part-time work is considered a "compulsory course" in student life. Why is that? Firstly, from a financial perspective, although part-time work can help earn some extra money, it may be insignificant compared to tuition and living expenses. However, it's worth mentioning that every international student's personal and family situation is different. Through these efforts, one can at least reduce some living expenses, alleviate parental pressure, and develop the ability to be self-reliant. Secondly, from a social perspective, during part-time work, one can meet new friends. Sometimes, it must be admitted that the more outstanding individuals tend to work harder. Whether it's as a waiter/waitress, cleaner, customer service representative, or salesperson, it requires communication and interaction. While improving one's spoken English, there is also an opportunity to make friends with locals from the UK and people from around the world, and even find a significant other or great friends. It enhances one's ability to communicate with others and reduces the feeling of loneliness while being in a foreign country. Thirdly, from a career planning perspective, it allows individuals to have an earlier exposure to the real face of society. Some personal experiences or encounters can also be helpful for future personal planning. Some may ask, "What's the use of doing a job that has nothing to do with my major or future career field?" Let me give you an example. I have a senior student who studied law while studying abroad. Initially, she worked part-time as a mobile phone salesperson, a typical sales advisory role. After graduation, she joined a commercial bank as an advisor. Through her efforts, continuous learning, and improvement, she is now a well-known investment and financial advisor. Lastly, the experience of working part-time during the study abroad period can bring about changes in one's attitude towards life and the way they interact with others. There is an old saying that goes, "Without experiencing hardships, one cannot persuade others to do good." Through firsthand experiences of various things, one gains a deeper understanding of many aspects of life.
