Mobile SIM Card ✅
Before going to Australia, you can buy a discounted temporary package on a certain online platform. After arriving, it's important to quickly get a local SIM card because most other processes require a local phone number. Depending on your data usage, you can later purchase a long-term plan. If you use less data, it can cost as little as around $100 per year. For example, the SIM card from WWS, which uses Telstra's network, is cheaper.
Public Transportation Card ✅
Regardless of whether you plan to buy a car later on, you will need to get a public transportation card. Cash payments are no longer accepted on most buses, especially in places like Adelaide where only the transportation card is valid. As an international student, remember to buy a student card as it offers significant discounts. The student transportation card must be used together with a student ID.
Bank Card ✅
For the four major banks, you can choose the one with a branch nearest to you to apply for a bank card. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), represented by the color yellow, has a user-friendly app. Moreover, you can apply for their bank card in China and collect it directly in Australia. (Please transfer money to CBA quickly!)
Driver's License / Proof of Age Card ✅
Australia has strict age restrictions, especially when purchasing tobacco, alcohol, or lottery tickets. Australians typically use their driver's license as proof of age. However, in some places where it is not accepted, students without a driver's license can use a proof of age card.
Insurance Card ✅
Before coming to Australia, international students usually purchase insurance. After arriving, you can collect the physical insurance card. Some major companies like Medibank also support electronic cards.
Student Card ✅
The main purpose of a student card is to provide discounts. It can be used for public transportation and tourist attractions. Apple also offers educational discounts. By registering with UNiDAYS to verify your student status, you can enjoy discounts on many brands. However, please note that it may be considered a low-weight form of identification.
