Why is it so hard to find social housing in Melbourne?

Next January, I'm heading to Melbourne, and right now, I'm on the hunt for a 🏠. I've contacted numerous agents, but it seems like all they offer are student apartments, and they feel so cramped 😭. I'm hoping for some options in the general housing market; a bit more roomy and convenient would be great [FairyR]. The prices for one-bedroom places seem a bit outrageous, and there's not even a sign of a 2-bedroom. Seriously feeling lost, folks. Why is finding a place so darn difficult? [PigheadR]
