Some money-saving tips that you might not know after coming to Australia. I used to unintentionally waste money too [shocked face emoji].
✔1. Get a local bank account as soon as possible.
Some people may hesitate, thinking that it's just for studying and wondering if it's necessary to open another bank account. But I think it's worth it because it can save you on transaction fees. Especially for things like tuition fees and rent, either your domestic card won't work or there will be high transaction fees. It's much more inconvenient than just getting a local bank account. Even Visa cards have transaction fees, and I really don't want to spend extra money.
✔2. Transfer money between Bank of China accounts without fees.
You don't need to have Bank of China accounts in the same name in Australia and China. As long as it's a Bank of China card, it works.
✔3. Tax File Number (TFN).
Even though you're a student, if you have money in the bank that generates interest, you will need to pay taxes on it. They will deduct the tax from your interest. It may not seem like a loss, but it's still saving money. So it's better to apply for a TFN when you have time. And it's free! No cost!
✔4. Use an Opal card for commuting.
The public transport card in Melbourne and Sydney may have different names, but they are used in a similar way and offer discounts. It can save you money.
✔5. Go grocery shopping at Coles or Woolworths on Wednesdays.
These supermarkets have special deals on Wednesdays, with prices as low as half price. Buy a week's worth of groceries in one day and save a lot.
✔6. Living in the suburbs doesn't save money.
Consider the commuting costs and time. The price difference between living a bit further or closer to the city in student apartments won't be significant. It may seem cheaper, but you'll end up spending more on commuting. You can also find people to share a rental apartment, and if there are two or more people sharing, it will be more cost-effective than a student apartment, provided that bills are included.
✔7. Make your own breakfast.
Australian breakfasts... I choose to make my own or skip this step...
✔8. Group buying is always useful!
Use apps like Liven for dining, Hopper for flights, and browse Unidays when you have free time.

Hope this helps you~
